Food Insecurity

Did you know that 1 in 6 Americans struggle with hunger, including 12.5 million families?

Milk’s rich nutrient package makes it a powerful weapon in the fight against food insecurity. But milk production isn’t the only way local dairy farmers combat hunger.

Breakfast in the Classroom

Breakfast in the Classroom is a hunger-fighting initiative that offers students a free or discounted breakfast during the first class period of the day.

  • Eliminates the stigma surrounding families who may not be able to afford the meal because breakfast is available to all students free of charge.
  • Ensures kids have time to eat breakfast even if they’re too busy at home.

Through Dairy MAX, local dairy farmers provide grants to help schools purchase breakfast equipment, like carts and milk coolers. We also offer training and other tools to help schools get the program off the ground.

The Great American Milk Drive

Milk is one of the most requested but least donated foods in America’s food banks. America’s dairy farmers decided to do something about that by creating The Great American Milk Drive. Since food banks can’t take donations of perishable items from the public, The Great American Milk Drive allows you to donate money to your local food bank to be used for milk.

When you donate, the dollars are sent to the food bank in your ZIP code in the form of coupons for milk. Then, clients can use those coupons at the local grocery or convenience store to buy the milk of their choice.
