Why Kids Should Be Active on Summer Break

Summer is coming, and long days without school can leave parents wondering how to keep their kids active and healthy. During the school year, recess, athletics and school sports provide the recommended daily 60 minutes of physical activity, but during summer it can be easy for kids to get off track. Instead of spending their summer break in front of the television or playing video games, here are some ideas to help you keep them moving:

  • Join a summer sports or recreation league
  • Get active as a family by going on walks, hikes or bike rides
  • Stay cool and active at the pool – swim laps or hold a diving competition
  • If you don’t have access to a pool, water balloons, sprinklers or water guns are a fun way to keep cool and get moving
  • Check your town’s calendar for family events – outdoor concerts, festivals and farmer’s markets are fun ways to get kids out of the house

Staying active during the summer doesn’t have to be difficult and helps keep both bodies and minds healthy.
